Move Over Google: Why Gen Z Searches on TikTok

When I want to find a good restaurant in Bratislava, I don't open Google Maps anymore. I open Instagram. When I want to learn how to fix a specific bug in Excel, I don't read a blog post. I search TikTok.
And I'm a Millennial. For Gen Z and Gen Alpha, this behavior isn't a preference; it's the default.
The Death of "10 Blue Links"
Google's classic search results page—10 blue links, buried under 4 sponsored ads—is dying a slow death. Why? Because it requires cognitive load. You have to click, read, go back, click again, accept cookies, close a popup...
Social Search is visual and immediate.
- You search "best coffee Bratislava."
- You see a video.
- You see the vibe, the latte art, the crowd.
- Decision made.
What is Social SEO?
Social SEO is the art of optimizing your social content to be found by these in-app search engines. It is different from traditional SEO.
1. Keywords in Captions and On-Screen Text
Algorithms can "read" your video. If you are talking about "marketing trends," make sure those words appear on the screen as text overlays. Put them in your caption. Speak them out loud (auto-captions pick them up).
2. The "Alt Text" Opportunity
Most people ignore Alt Text on Instagram and TikTok. Don't. It is a direct signal to the algorithm about what your content is. Describe your image using the keywords your customers are searching for.
3. Hashtags are Categories, Not Jokes
Stop using #fyp or #viral. They are useless. Treat hashtags like library categories. Use #SlovakMarketing, #BratislavaBusiness, #AItools2025. Help the algorithm file your content in the right drawer.
The Trust Factor
The biggest reason Social Search is winning is Social Proof.
On Google, the top result is often the company with the biggest SEO budget. On TikTok or Reddit, the top result is often a real person sharing an honest opinion. In an era of deepfakes and AI slop, that human validation is worth its weight in gold.
If your brand isn't show up when someone types your category into the TikTok search bar, you are invisible to an entire generation of customers. It's time to optimize for the new search engines.
